The increasing risk of violence against retail workers

A recent report from the USDAW union which represents retail workers details the levels of violence against retail workers throughout the UK. The retail sector would traditionally have been viewed as a low risk sector for violent assaults. An increase in retail crime as well as tighter retailer returns policies and a decrease in staffing levels across retail outlets have led to increased risks for staff.

The survey reveals that 35% of shop workers had been threatened by shop workers while over half had been verbally abused. Retail employers are becoming increasingly concerned about these trends in an already difficult trading environment.
